Genioplasty

Do you want to improve chin plasticity and therefore change the shape of your face? If so, genioplasty is a solution tailored to your needs. Thanks to plastic surgery, you can correct the chin and give the face a harmonious look, as well as restore its proper proportions. The chin resurfacing can also be performed in conjunction with a nose correction. The main task of the procedure is, first of all, to reduce or enlarge an excessively prominent chin. Such actions affect the symmetry of the face. To reduce the chin, surgeons use sawing and modelling of the bones, while augmentation may be performed with implants, fillers and the patient’s own fat.

Genioplasty of the chin and improvement of facial features

The shape of the chin affects not only the facial features and its overall appearance, but also the patient’s well-being. Facial asymmetry in the chin area may additionally occur in conjunction with inadequate projection of this area of the face. Chin surgery and surgical procedures allow to correct both developmental defects and those acquired because of injuries or diseases. Chin genioplasty as a surgical procedure involves changing the shape of the chin – correcting a protruding or receding chin. Thanks to the surgery, the patient can enjoy changing the position of the chin by moving it backwards or by putting it forward. Genioplasty qualifies as oral surgery medicine.

To change the shape and size of the chin, genioplasty involves surgical correction of this part of the face. It consists in cutting the bone with a displacement of the chin area, and then fusing it in a new position.

indications

Indications

Genioplasty with chin retraction is performed on patients who struggle with complexes and are not satisfied with the appearance and proportions of their face – the shape and size of the chin area. The indications for the procedure are also features that relate to the unsightly transition of the face to the neck, i.e., the double chin. The genioplasty treatment is also a proposition for people who want a better, more aesthetic profile. Sometimes the indications also include therapeutic considerations.

Genioplasty is performed on adults when craniofacial growth has already ended. The patient undergoing the procedure must be in good general health. If the problem turns out to be more complex, a combined treatment in the form of orthodontics and genioplasty combined with a shift of the jaw or mandible may be necessary.

Many patients who undergo genioplasty struggle with a receding chin, which results from a congenital defect characterized by the lack of a clear contour between the neck and chin. An indication is also a protruding chin, i.e., a defect consisting in the excessive protrusion of the lower jaw forward. People with too small of a chin are also eligible for genioplasty surgery. This problem usually affects people with a thin face, which makes the face appear asymmetrical and short. It is also an ideal solution for people with larger chin, which makes the face look elongated. Moreover, if you want to:

  • enjoy a better face profile,
  • restore the face to a symmetrical appearance and proper proportions,
  • eliminate a double chin,

in addition, if you want to improve your overall well-being, and improve the appearance of your facial profile, genioplasty will be the best solution for you.

The procedure

Before starting the procedure, the patient is referred for consultation with a surgeon. The meeting will allow the specialist to find out the reasons that made the patient decide to undergo surgery. Some doctors will also perform a computer simulation and present the patient what results can be expected and what the face will look like after genioplasty. Thanks to the consultation before the procedure, the doctor may also suggest a solution that will allow you to achieve a proportional shape and size of the chin. He will also present all available techniques, methods of anaesthesia, possible complications after the procedure and inform the patient about the benefits of the procedure. During the consultation with a specialist, the patient may also ask questions and dispel any doubts. Usually, the surgeon will order the necessary tests to be performed before the surgery and will also recommend an anaesthesiologist consultation within 48 hours before the surgery.

Before the procedure, the patient must follow the surgeon’s instructions. You should not take aspirin and its derivatives for 10 days before the surgery. You should also limit (or even stop altogether) smoking one month in advance. In the first months after the procedure, you should also refrain from smoking in order to speed up the wound healing process.

Chin genioplasty is not a long procedure – it usually takes about 1-2 hours. The surgeon starts the surgery by cutting the mucosa from the inside of the mouth. The advantage of this procedure is the lack of any wounds and scars on the patient’s face. After the incisions are made, the doctor enters the chin part of the mandible intraorally. Then, depending on the type of correction, the specialist cuts the bone in a given area, moves the fragments, models and assembles the shifted fragments, thanks to titanium plates and screws.

Sometimes there is also an enlargement of the chin part with bone graft from the iliac plate. After the surgery, the patient is put on a chin dressing and given painkillers. After the genioplasty is completed, there may be a slight discomfort and pain, which, however, disappears after a few days after the procedure.

The effects

After the surgery, the patient must strictly follow the surgeon’s instructions to improve the wound healing process. It is also extremely important to maintain proper oral hygiene and avoid eating hot food in the first 48 hours after having genioplasty. The first effects will be visible just a few days after the treatment, but you have to wait a few months for the final results.

The genioplasty effect is primarily a reduction in the shape of the face and the appearance of the chin. Changes usually have a significant impact on the patient’s well-being and self-esteem.

The surgery allows for harmonious, symmetrical facial features and a nice profile. Depending on the problem the patient was facing prior to surgery, the result may be an enlarged or receding chin.

If you are looking for an effective way to improve your well-being and reduce chin imperfections, and also want to improve the appearance of facial features and profile, the genioplasty treatment will meet your expectations.
